CO2FREE

Reducing the percentage of CO2 in cement of concrete sleepers

Project information

  • Acronym: CO2FREE
  • Reducing the percentage of CO2 in cement of concrete sleepers
  • Project director: Christian Chavanel
  • Project manager: Rosa Casquero
  • Status: ongoing project
  • Project code: 2020/RSF/784

Project description

This work will have to be carried out in collaboration with Technical Universities which know the production of prestressed monoblock concrete sleepers and too of the concrete structures (bridges…) because the concrete structures use since many years already concretes CEM II and CEM III.
The stages suggested will be the following ones:

  • Definition of cements and the concretes in agreement with EN 197 series “Cement”, EN 206 “Concrete - Specification, performance, production and conformity” and IRS 70713 “Recommendations for design and use of prestressed monoblock concrete sleepers” for the prestressed concrete sleeper production,
  • Laboratory Tests and if necessary, in track,
  • List tests necessary to validate cement for prestressed concrete sleepers,
  • List known cements recommended for the prestressed concrete sleeper production.

Project objectives

The objectives of the project are:

  • To define the criteria defining cement and concrete fulfilling the requirements of quality and durability of the prestressed concrete sleepers in agreement with EN 197 series “Cement”, EN 206 “Concrete - Specification, performance, production and conformity” and IRS 70713 “Recommendations for design and use of prestressed monoblock concrete sleepers”,
  • To define the tests laboratory and in way to validate cement,
  • To evaluate the impacts on the concrete sleeper production (time of drying, profit of resistances, additives recommended…).
