The UIC Aeronoise project led by the UIC Interaction and Interfaces between Infrastructure and Rolling Stock (TTI) Sector held a hybrid meeting on 15 June 2022 in Paris. Almost all the experts were able to meet again in person.

The experts reported on work completed to date and exchanged updates on ongoing tasks and project activities before the summer holiday period. The current focus is the planned WP2, devoted to modelling noise propagation and defining data processing.

Special guest, Professor Michael Dittrich joined the meeting to debate the approach for speeds above 220 km/h with the experts.

UIC presented the final report corresponding to the WP1 deliverable. The published report contains a state-of-the-art review. The following topics are described:

  • General railway aero-acoustics
    • Aero-acoustic noise generation
    • Aeronoise source ranking
    • Analysis of acoustic performance against current limits
  • Review of measurements
    • Review of relevant previous research
    • Review of mitigation measures (on trains)
    • Review of existing methods of characterising rolling stock emissions at high speed
    • Comparison of the different methods
    • Identification of existing open points in current standards

The report can be downloaded from the UIC ETF shop for free:

The next progress meeting will take place on 29 September 2022.

The UIC Aeronoise project is concerned with measurement and analysis systems to characterise the aerodynamic noise of high-speed trains. The project members are Adif, BaneNor, CZ, HS2, SNCF and Trafikverket, with SENER and ISVR Consulting as consultants.
