CARBODIN (Car Body Shells, Doors and Interiors) is a €3.5 million project led by Fundació EURECAT (Spain) in collaboration with 13 other European partners from seven different countries representing a balanced combination of academia, industry (including small and medium-sized enterprises), associations and research:

The main goal of this 27-month project was to develop innovative solutions for advanced car body shell manufacturing, lightweight material strategies for railways and innovative doors and train modularity, contributing to the S2R IP1 strategy. In this context, CARBODIN is making a major contribution to the next generation of passenger trains, which will be lighter and more energy- and cost-efficient than the current fleet.
Simona Neri, Project Coordinator, welcomed the participants and provided an overview of the project’s progress, with a particular focus on project activities, final results and exploitation strategy. Javier Ibañez, Shift2Rail JU Programme Manager, presented the Shift2Rail JU programme and how CARBODIN fits into this context.
Special attention was given to the opportunity of presenting the CARBODIN demonstrator at INNOTRANS 2022, with all interested parties invited to attend. The work package leaders then introduced the 12 WPs, highlighting the objectives and the results achieved in each task.
On 25 February, the consortium interacted with external participants, interested stakeholders and end users to explain how the consortium plans to manage the market uptake of the innovative solutions developed within the project. The open event proved to be a valuable forum for discussion of the project results and ways of ensuring that they contribute to the success of the European railway system.
The final event was a perfect opportunity to look back at the solutions successfully developed by CARBODIN and to initiate a discussion with interested stakeholders on the next steps to ensure widespread adoption of these solutions. The CARBODIN team extends its thanks to all the participants.
