On 26 February 2013, the six locomotives purchased last year by Cameroon Railway Company Camrail have been put into service. The locomotives were presented to the public during a commissioning ceremony in Yaoundé main railway station.
The six new locomotives, each with a haulage capacity of 2500 tonnes and 2500 horsepower rating, cost Camrail a total of nine billion CFA francs.
According to Camrail’s Chairman of the Board Hamadou Sali, “these investments fall within the scope of commitments agreed by Camrail under amendment N° 2 of the concession agreement signed on 4 November 2008 between the Cameroon government and Camrail.” This amendment provides for investments amounting to 230 billion CFA francs over the 2009 – 2020 period, of which 158 billion CFA francs are to be invested by Camrail and 72 billion CFA francs are to be invested by the Cameroon government.
