MTA Metro-North Railroad, the first American railroad winner of the Brunel Awards Jury Prize for overall design excellence, is hosting an exhibit of contest entries from 43 passenger and freight railways from 15 countries on three continents. The travelling exhibit will feature display panels of all projects that received an award or commendation in the five categories of competition last year.

The Brunel Awards recognise and promote the best in architecture, planning, design and branding among the world’s railways. The Jury Prize is only eligible to railroads that enter a project in all categories, which Metro-North did. It was placed first in the “Freight and Railway Support Buildings” category for the Croton-Harmon Locomotive and Coach Shops. These two new facilities are designed with ultra-modern equipment maintenance capability that provides a safe, clean work environment. They represent the largest capital and engineering project ever undertaken by Metro-North.

The 2011 edition of the prestigious Brunel Awards International Railway Design Competition was organised by the Association of American Railroads (AAR), the Center for Industrial Design in Transportation (C4IDT), USA and the International Union of Railways (UIC). The awards were announced on 10 August 2011 in Washington D.C. in the presence of UIC Director-General Jean-Pierre Loubinoux.
