The International Union of Railways (UIC) is pleased to announce the release of the UIC Night Train Atlas – 2024 Edition, the first comprehensive reference dedicated to the current state and future development of night train services in Europe and beyond.
Developed under the coordination of the UIC Intercity & High-Speed Committee (ICHSC) and the UIC Night Train Working Group (NTWG), and built in close cooperation with UIC member railways, the Night Train Atlas brings together a wealth of reliable, operator-sourced data on today’s night train networks. It stands as a strategic tool to support dialogue, cooperation and transparency within a fast-evolving sector.
This inaugural edition offers a clear and richly illustrated overview of the present state of night train services – covering both national and cross-border operations – and provides insight into the infrastructure, rolling stock and passenger services that underpin them.
What the Night Train Atlas includes:
- Route-by-route profiles, validated by operators, with key data on equipment, frequency and service conditions
- Country-specific maps showing the structure and reach of night train networks
- Snapshots of train types, including sleeping cars, couchettes and seated accommodation
- Essential passenger information such as on-board services, language support and accessibility
- A basis for informed discussion, future planning and targeted investment in the sustainable growth of overnight rail
At a time when long-distance rail is re-emerging as a low-carbon alternative to air travel, the Night Train Atlas helps contextualise where the sector stands today – offering a solid, operational benchmark that can inform both policy thinking and technical cooperation.
It is designed to be a reference tool, aligned with wider sustainable mobility goals and supporting international efforts to strengthen the role of night trains in delivering low-carbon, long-distance transport solutions.
