The CBRNe4rail project (CBRNe preparedness for passenger rail transport hubs), co-funded by the European Union and coordinated by the UIC Security Department, aims to enhance awareness and capabilities of railway stakeholders to effectively respond to Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and explosive (CBRNe) emergencies at railway stations by improving their security plans and training railway staff.
The project kicked off in June and has already reached out to relevant stakeholders through key communication activities.
Grigore Havârneanu (CBRNe4rail Project Coordinator) reached out to European rail security experts and rail police authorities during the General Assembly of COLPOFER, a UIC special group, on 17-19 June in Pietrarsa, Italy.
He also attended the European Commission Directorate-General Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE) 15th Working Party on Rail Security (RAILSEC) meeting on 30 June and introduced the project to this forum.
Laura Petersen (CBRNe4rail Dissemination Manager) was an invited panelist to the ‘London Bombings and Transport Security’ event, hosted by the Counter Terrorism Preparedness Network in partnership with the United Nations Office of Counter Terrorism, where she described the project and invited the prestigious attendees to join the project’s advisory board.
Moreover, the project joined the ‘Secure Worship & Public Spaces Cluster’ (SecuPWS) and the ‘CBRNE and Standardisation Cluster’ (CSTAC) of EU-funded projects. Further synergies with these cluster members will be identified in the coming months, as the project gains more traction.
The project has just launched a survey to collect needs and gaps on CBRNe preparedness from railway companies. Relevant management and security staff are invited to fill out the online form until 10 September.
